Strong Interactions: From QCD to LHC

Dates: July 17-30

Organizer: Francesco Sannino

Description:

The inauguration of the Large Hadronc Collider at CERN at the end of 2007 will be the beginning of a new era for particle physics.
Theoretical arguments supported by experimental facts indicate that the present understanding of Nature is incomplete. In the theoretical laboratory, a multitude of scenarios are being proposed, discussed and constrained. Extra dimensions, supersymmetry, particle substructure, new strongly interacting theories at the weak scale, are scenarios currently under intense discussion. If any of these are true, it will imply a new watershed in our understanding of Nature.
The precise nature of the Higgs boson is a fundamental problem in theoretical physics. Is the Higgs boson, if it exists at all, elementary or composite? The Large Hadron Collider experiment at CERN will be soon shedding light on this sector of the electroweak theory. We will finally understand the origin of the mass generation of all fundamental particles. Understanding the true nature of the Higgs mechanism will guide us toward the correct fundamental theory of particle interactions.
